$110k for Bourbonnais park project for new riverfront land
The Village of Bourbonnais is excited to announce that it is the recipient of a $110,000 member initiative grant. The news of the allocation, from Senator Patrick Joyce, follows a recent notice that 6.63 acres of parkland had been donated to the Village of Bourbonnais. Three parcels, adjacent to Riverfront Park with an approximate 600 feet of river frontage, were gifted by the Johnston family.
The connection arose as a result of the village's 'Imagine Bourbonnais' planning process and community engagement campaign for Riverfront Park that commenced this time last year.
Due to the significant endowment, the village placed a temporary halt on the 'Imagine Bourbonnais' master planning for Riverfront Park.
"We couldn't be more thankful to receive this positive news from Senator Joyce's office," said Bourbonnais Mayor, Paul Schore. "Working together with our community has grown into this beautiful gift that keeps on giving, and now, the funds to enhance the open space."
Senator Joyce added, “Delivering results for the communities of the 40th district is a top priority for me. I’m excited to secure state funds for this project, which will enhance an already beautiful park enjoyed by residents.”
Mayor Schore confirmed the extra acreage would remain natural as part of the agreement with the Johnston family. He added walking trails connecting to Riverfront Park will be considered; however, more details will become available once the planning process is reinstated.
"Residents have been a large part of the village's park planning, and we continue to welcome their input."
Riverfront Park is located at the end of Canterbury Lane. It is classified as a premier park and totals 13.18 acres, with an approximate 1,120 feet of river frontage. Riverfront Park is one of two local parks nestled along the Kankakee River. The park contains both active and passive recreational activities while preserving unique landscapes and open spaces for residents and visitors.
The Village of Bourbonnais currently maintains over 100 acres of parkland. 24 local parks provide residents with a myriad of passive to active recreation for all ages. The most recent park opening was the new playground featured at The Grove at Goselin Park. Situated in the 12.5-acre outdoor venue and central gathering space, the modern, ADA-friendly park was welcomed by residents with exceptional reviews.
