Bourbonnais, IL – The Bourbonnais Police Department announces its first canine unit will be officially sworn in at the Village of Bourbonnais Board Meeting next Monday, November 4, at 5:30 p.m., in the Municipal Center at 700 Main St. NW. Canine handler, Sergeant Tim Banks, has been a member of the Bourbonnais Police Department since 2013 and will oversee canine officer, Knight – a 5-1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois.

“Our force continues to grow in diversity, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome, Knight, to the Bourbonnais Police Department,” stated Chief Jim Phelps. “He will be an exceptional tool for aiding officers in keeping village streets safe.”

Together, Sgt. Banks and Knight are highly trained having conducted hundreds of hours of training and field work. Knight is a multi-purpose canine trained in tracking, locating missing subjects, apprehension, and illicit substance detection and location.

The Bourbonnais Police Department consists of 26 officers serving and protecting all persons and property within the jurisdiction of the Village of Bourbonnais. The village has a population of 18,164 (Decennial Census, 2020) and has been ranked the 38th safest city in Illinois (National Council for Home Safety and Security, 2020)
