1% Sales Tax Proposed for Property Tax Relief
Bourbonnais, IL - Village of Bourbonnais trustees adopted an ordinance to place a referendum on the November election ballot for Bourbonnais residents to decide if they should add 1 percent to its sales tax at Monday's board meeting.
The funds collected would be used to offer property tax rebates to single-family owner-occupied homeowners in the village.
Currently, the village receives an average of $300 annually from a homeowner with a property valued at $200,000.
The sales tax of 1 percent excludes grocery items such as food as well as vehicle titles or registrations in the state, according to state law.
The current sales tax rate in the Village of Bourbonnais is 6.25 percent and 7.25 percent in three business districts.
If the referendum passes in the November election, the sales tax would increase to 7.25 percent. The new sales tax would go into effect in July 1, 2023. If citizens vote to approve the 1% sales tax, homeowners would receive their first rebate in 2024, following submitting a complete application.
